# FerryFetch: full reference > Know your ferry's status before you're standing at the dock. Track live ferry departures, arrivals, and check-in status, then get an alert the moment your sailing is delayed or cancelled, before you leave for the dock. FerryFetch answers time-sensitive questions such as "is the ferry running today", "any ferry cancellations today", "current conditions" and "how long is the sailing wait", plus per-route and per-terminal schedules. It combines AIS (Automatic Identification System) vessel positions with published operator timetables, and sends push alerts when a delay, early departure or cancellation is detected, often before the operator posts the official notice. FerryFetch is an independent product and is not affiliated with any ferry operator. ## Coverage The supported operators are BC Ferries, Hullo, Washington State Ferries, Coho Ferry and FRS Clipper, serving British Columbia, Canada and Washington State, United States. The Salish Sea is the starting point, not the limit; more operators and regions are planned. FerryFetch is built by a remote team. ## How it works 1. Operator schedules are ingested and normalised, with holiday and seasonal exceptions applied. 2. Each vessel's AIS broadcast is read continuously (position and speed update every few seconds while under way). 3. Live positions are matched to scheduled sailings to compute status, ETA and an ETA confidence level (HIGH / MEDIUM / LOW). 4. Followers of a sailing get a push notification when the data indicates a delay, an early departure or a cancellation. ## Apps FerryFetch runs in any modern browser and as a native app for iOS and Android. Vessel positions come from AIS broadcasts read continuously and matched to the published timetable; the map refreshes about once a minute. When a signal drops out the vessel keeps its last known position, labelled with how old it is, rather than a guessed one. Tsawwassen is a vehicle terminal with on-site parking in its holding lot, and every vehicle sailing from Tsawwassen queues there before loading. Vehicles without a booking join the queue and load in order of arrival for the next available sailing. **How early should I arrive at the Tsawwassen ferry terminal?** BC Ferries assigns each vehicle a lane at check-in and loads unbooked vehicles in order of arrival, so there is no single arrival time that fits every sailing. FerryFetch reads AIS (Automatic Identification System) signals broadcast by each vessel and updates positions and ETAs every few seconds. ### How often is the data updated? Vessel positions and status refresh continuously as new AIS signal arrives, typically every few seconds. ### Which ferry operators does FerryFetch cover? FerryFetch currently tracks routes on the operators it supports, with more planned as coverage expands. ### Is FerryFetch free to use? Yes, tracking live ferry status, ETAs, and delay alerts on FerryFetch is free. ### Why does FerryFetch show a different status than the operator's own site? FerryFetch tracks vessels directly, so it can surface delays or position changes quickly, though figures can occasionally differ from the operator's own site. ### What is the difference between a predicted and confirmed ETA? A predicted ETA is FerryFetch's estimate from live vessel position and speed. Follow a sailing in the app to get a push notification when our live data indicates a delay, an early departure, or a cancellation. ### How often is a vessel's position updated? Vessel positions and ETAs refresh continuously as new AIS signal arrives, typically every few seconds while a vessel is under way. ### What does the ETA confidence label mean? Confidence (HIGH, MEDIUM, or LOW) describes how reliable the ETA itself is, based mainly on the vessel's speed and how fresh its AIS signal is. A tilde before a time means the estimate is approximate. ### Can I follow more than one route at a time? Yes.
